SUSTAINABILITY
Environmental sustainability is at the core of our business at Growthpoint, and we are committed to creating sustained value by integrating environmental, social and economic issues into our corporate strategy. In the last 10 years, Growthpoint has played a critical role in leading the transition of green building as an experimental activity in the property sector to an integrated component in the conceptualisation, implementation and operation of buildings.

Greener Cities
As a platinum founding member of the Green Building Council South Africa (GBCSA), we work hard to create sustainable workspaces with minimal environmental impact, while providing maximum benefit to the people occupying these spaces.
Our Strategy & Targets
We are taking our climate response strategy to the next level by implementing a robust and viable carbon-neutral strategy. We aim to achieve carbon neutrality through data-driven targets that benefit the business and our stakeholders. Energy efficiency, off-site renewables, and on-site renewables have been identified as four critical role players in our overall strategy.

RENEWABLE ENERGY
Our focus is on rooftop solar PV plants, which are currently the most viable renewable energy option for our property portfolio. We plan to increase energy generation from solar plants significantly to achieve energy efficiency and security and reduce CO₂ emissions from energy consumption. We are excited about the opportunity to support the planned carbon-neutral strategy with a solar PV roll-out.
Wheeling
Growthpoint Properties has entered into a landmark Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Etana Energy for 195GWh of renewable energy annually, representing 32% of our total electricity consumption. Signed in November 2023, this agreement will wheel electricity to our commercial properties across South Africa, marking the country’s first multi-jurisdiction, multi-building, multi-source renewable energy wheeling arrangement. This enables our clients to access green energy and significantly reduce their carbon footprint. The wheeled energy will primarily come from wind, supplemented by hydro and large-scale solar, ensuring high coverage throughout the day and night. We are extremely pleased to collaborate with energy innovators like Etana to support our tenants in reaching their own ESG goals by giving them access to renewable energy.

Greenovate
The Greenovate Awards aims to expose the students to key focus areas concerning sustainability within the industry and introduce the industry to the talent available to them. The Awards encourages students to learn about green building and sustainability early in their careers. Essentially, we want them to enter the market as advocates for green building, passionate about creating better, more sustainable cities, towns, and neighbourhoods. These are tomorrow’s leaders who will take the green building movement forward and ensure it continues to innovate and inspire.
